Research into upcycled bread in dry dog food
During his doctoral research in 2018–2022, our founder, Dr. Ercan Mevliyaoğulları, investigated the use of waste bread as an alternative ingredient in dog food. The research approached food resource reuse through nutritional science and processing technology.
The study examined baking and extrusion, product physicochemical characteristics and digestibility measured under laboratory conditions. Those measurements define the scope of the research; the findings are not presented as a feeding claim applying equally to every dog or every formulation.
Published in the Journal of Cereal Science, this work was featured by Pet Food Processing on 17 October 2023. The article discussed the ingredient and processing approach, dry food structure and laboratory digestibility measurements.
Wet grinding and extrusion in process development
A separate MEVLİ R&D project conducted in 2021–2023 explored the use of cafeteria leftovers in dog feed production. It investigated changes to the material’s flow and deformation properties through successive wet grinding.
We combined this approach with our process development work aimed at converting the material into dog feed through extrusion. The bread-based doctoral research and this completed MEVLİ project are separate studies involving different materials and scopes.
From research to pilot production
Dog food R&D helps us understand ingredients within a production process. We apply our experience in grinding, baking and extrusion when considering formulation, processing and finished-product structure together.
